The Guitar Sessions
Three renowned guitarists to perform and teach at USQ Artsworx in 2018
About The Guitar Sessions Concept
The portability and accessibility of the guitar – and the global flow of the many decades of the folk and popular music’s that feature it – ensured that the instrument has travelled, finding a space in musical cultures around the world. Local musics absorbed the instrument, extending and enriching its techniques and repertoires in ways that have inspired subsequent generations of guitarists.
As a result, it’s now common to find guitarists as knowledgeable and passionate about Afro-Cuban highlife guitar, Bluegrass, and obscure Celtic guitar tunings, as the latest rock guitar hero.
The work of the three guitarists in the 2018 Guitar Sessions reflects this curiosity and diversity of approach. All have tackled at least one of the ‘big traditions’ of guitar – including western art music, jazz, the music of Brazil, rock and pop music – and built an individual voice both within and beyond the traditions.
Adam Miller’s soulful and dextrous take on contemporary fingerstyle guitar, Anthony Garcia’s bold, passionate blend of the old and new, and Doug de Vries’ elegant compositional voice and deep knowledge of string traditions will make for a stunning series of solo concerts. This is an exciting opportunity to hear some of the most vibrant voices of the Australian guitar scene.
