About the film

This 1987 film is a portrait of Berlin in the 1980s and features cameo appearance by Australian bands, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Crime and the City Solution.  Voted the second best film of the 80s, Wings of Desire is one of the top 50 highest grossing foreign films to be released in the US. Described as a ‘visionary film about vision’ the film was released two years before the fall of the Berlin Wall and contains overt symbolism and commentary from filmmakers Wim Wenders, Peter Handke and Richard Reitinger.

Set in a still very much divided Berlin, the film tells the tale of a guardian angel, who craves the human experience after falling in love with a melancholy trapeze artist. Shot in colour, as well as black and white, the film captured both the admiration of highbrow critics and mainstream audiences like few idea-challenging foreign films before or since its release.

Trivia bite: The black and white sequences were shot through a one-of-a-kind filter (made from a stocking belonging to the cinematographer’s grandmother).
