Guitar Workshop: Jazz, Bossa Nova and Accompaniment with Doug de Vries
Learn to create a true Bossa Nova and Samba sound!
Doug de Vries will present an inclusive workshop informed by his considerable experience in many genres and settings over the last four decades.
A specialist in Brazilian guitar and its nexus with jazz, Doug de Vries will demonstrate and instruct teachers and students how to create true Bossa Nova and Samba, while maintaining an individual and personal approach to this repertoire.
There will be a strong focus on accompaniment in various settings and a guide to best outcomes when improvising on and reinterpreting standard tunes.
Notes will be provided ahead of the workshop as there will be opportunities to play and discuss nuances of fine performance.
Suitable for both electric and acoustic guitarists with either plectrum or fingerstyle techniques. The workshop will take place in the USQ Arts Theatre, right before Doug’s feature concert at USQ Artsworx – a ticket to this concert is included in the workshop tuition.
Players of all levels are welcome to attend and participants will have the freedom to set their own level of practical involvement.
Considered Australia’s expert in Brazilian guitar, Doug has released a number of solo albums and recorded with the likes of Kate Ceberano, James Morrisson and Paul Grabowsky.
Doug entered the Australian scene through his long stint as resident guitarist in the house band on Steve Vizard’s Tonight Live (Channel 7), during which he took a private interest in Brazilian guitar. Having been described as exemplary, his work is highly credited within the Brazilian genre.
